Manhyia Palace Museum

4.4

Description

The Manhyia Palace Museum occupies the original palace constructed in 1925 by the British Colonial Government for Asantehene Agyeman Prempeh I, upon his return from 28 years in exile in the Seychelles. He accepted the building only after the Asante people paid for it in full, ensuring their autonomy. The structure served as the official residence for Prempeh I and Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II until the modern palace was built in 1970. In 1995, during Otumfuo Opoku Ware II’s Silver Jubilee, the old palace was converted into a museum at a cost of about GHC 12,000, funded by donations from Asanteman supporters.
