Cape Coast Castle

4.5

Description

The Cape Coast Castle is one of the sites to visit when you are in the Central Region.

One of about forty “slave castles”, or large commercial forts, built on the Gold Coast of West Africa (now Ghana) by European traders. It was originally a Portuguese “feitoria” or trading post, established in 1555, which was named Cabo Corso.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site played a significant role in the gold and slave trades. In addition to the slave dungeons, you can go to the “”Door of No Return,”” the final exit point for slaves being transported to the Americas and Caribbean. No slave ever returned alive after going through that door.

A Door of Return has been created for anyone who can trace their roots back to Ghana.
